A teenage letter - Edith
Larvik, 5 Dec. 1916
Dear Leo! Thank you so much for your lovely letter and the book you sent to me for my confirmation – they both made me very happy. The confirmation has now passed.
It was so wonderful that if it were possible, I would really like to do it again. The most beautiful thing was the blessing in the church on Sunday. The lessons were unfortunately not enjoyable, but it was still lovely. You should also get yourself confirmed. I received gifts all Saturday afternoon and got about 20 pieces of jewellery. Amongst others, the Thorsens and all three Randulfs sent presents. A golden ring with 5 light blue stones from Thorsens. Fine silver scissors from Thor Randulf. Thor R a gold armband with enamel and a black enamel medallion on a golden chain from Bernhard. The most wonderful was however, the present from Mummy and Daddy: a small silver pendant with aquamarines and 3 pearls. I believe no-one in the world has such lovely and good parents as us. I see every day how Mummy works for us and always thinks of us, and Daddy equally so. We often think of you and wish you were here with us. I am so sorry that Mummy can’t visit you for Christmas; she was so much looking forward to seeing you again, and you probably saw that too? And then nothing became of it! Mum has probably already written to you about Nina Fischer’s wish? You probably had a big belly laugh? I nearly did myself. Only you should see this card! I got a letter from Tante Lulla. She wrote among other things, that Annalise Neufeld has gotten married. Else Zilchert confirmation is also in December. You must rip this letter up as soon as you have read it, it is so stupid. You know I don’t know how to write letters. We rarely have news from Tante Grete and Elle. Things are not going well for them. Everything is so terribly expensive, and it is not possible to get many things such as sugar. Uncle Willy is also unwell. Things are so much better for us than for many others. Hopefully your studies will not be interrupted so that you finish sooner. I finish school this year. Exams start on Monday, and I will be put back in third grade if I fail. Otherwise I will continue to study.
Now live well my angel and goodbye for now
your
Edith
